Winnipeg with Kerry & Donna

The 6 hour drive from Edmonton to Saskatoon was tiring (after flying overnight from Alaska). But I arrived around 4:00pm and went for a walk to get back on schedule. An early evening and I was on the road again early the next day. Arrived at 6:00pm at the home of Kerry & Donna in a hot sunny Winnipeg.

They both have booked off from their part-time jobs so we can hang together for most of the time I am here. First up was off for drinks in the outdoor exchange area and on to visit the Assiniboine Park Zoo   A space occupying 1/3rd of the zoo is currently under construction and not due to open for another year so we made do with the other 2/3rds. It is an OK zoo but nothing special (although the promise of the new Journey to Churchill exhibit might make it a lot more interesting next year). 3 penguins occupied a huge building of their own which was mostly a shopping opportunity - a bit sad!  And I truly hope they get a mate of companion for their lone polar bear before the Journey to Churchill opens. Any way here are a few of the zoo inmates.

That evening we headed over to Kerry's Dad's home. Harold is looking well still at 91 and we had an enjoyable evening with him and Kerry's brother-in-law Jack (especially consuming the lovely sweet Cuban Rum that Jack brought back from his recent trip to Cuba).

Out again for drinks the next day and a nice Indian Curry before heading into the very modern Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG) to see the installation: "100 Masters: Only in Canada". Actually was quite a good outing with my favourites being some of the old European Masters (Picasso and Bacon) but also some of the Canadians (especially Emily Carr and the native artists). Read more at http://100masters.wag.ca (until the site disappears).

The weather continued hot so the next day we went shopping and spent 2 1/2 hours in the cinema to watch Man of Steel (the new Superman movie). It had its moments but was let now my the editing which could have easily cut 30 minutes out of the movie and made it better in the process.

Winnipeg Folk Festival

Wednesday, July 10, we headed over to set up camp in Birds Hill Park to attend the 5 days of the 40th edition of the Winnipeg Folk Festival. Kerry volunteered this year and would be working for several hours on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday but would also join Donna and I in the audience at other times. Mostly sunny hot days with little cloud brought out huge crowds. We did not mind the single day that brought cloud cover and spattering of rain - cooled things nicely. The WFF is spread over a large part of the park with food stalls, shopping areas, a family entertainment area, 3 taverns, and most importantly a main stage along with 7 other stages. This year the line up included Serena Ryder, Sylvia Tyson, Nathan Rogers (Stan Roger's son), and 72 other singers / groups. We camped out overnight and then had only short commutes from the campground to and from the festival area.

On Tuesday, Kerry and I headed out in my Jag to Redditt Ontario and the Fraser family cottage on the banks of Lake Armstrong.  I get to stay for 2 nights. Kerry holds out longer for his brother Greg to drop in and provide a ride home. Donna is staying in air-conditioned comfort at home in Winnipeg.
